Formed ten years ago as a grassroots, volunteer-driven organization, PSL has grown its reach and programming in recent years and is now operated by a full-time staff. That staff consists of an Executive Director and two full-time staff members who manage the day-to-day operations of the organization.
PSL fulfills its mission by educating and connecting entrepreneurs. We serve as a hub for founders to find mentors, build skills, and invest in building a diverse and inclusive community in our local startup ecosystem.

Philly Startup Leaders (PSL) is hiring an Executive Director who is able to advance PSL's mission to help drive the success of high-growth startups in the greater Philadelphia area. If you are an experienced nonprofit leader who is passionate about supporting entrepreneurs and cultivating a diverse and inclusive community, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors.

PSL’s mission is to help drive the success of high-growth startups in the greater Philadelphia area.

Formed ten years ago as a grassroots, volunteer-driven organization, PSL has grown its reach and programming in recent years and is now operated by a full-time staff. That staff consists of an Executive Director (this role) and two full-time staff members who manage the day-to-day operations of the organization.

PSL fulfills its mission by educating and connecting entrepreneurs. We serve as a hub for founders to find mentors, build skills, and invest in building a diverse and inclusive community in our local startup ecosystem.

Additionally, throughout the year, PSL executes on a full calendar of flagship events and programming. These include:

* Entrepreneur Expo, the city’s premier annual startup exhibition

* Founder Factory, a day-long educational conference for aspiring founders

* Bootcamp and Accelerator educational programs for early-stage entrepreneurs and companies

* The Start. Stay. Grow. fellowship program, which pairs college students with local startups

* Numerous events coordinated in collaboration with other partner organizations, including the annual Diversity Dinner and Innovation Picnic.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Board Governance: Works with board in order to fulfill the organization’s mission.

* Responsible for leading PSL in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.

* Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and seeking the Board’s involvement in policy decisions, strategic initiatives, messaging, and fundraising.

* Responsible for providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly, make informed decisions, and best fulfill its mission.

* Responsible for the organization of Board and committee meetings, including preparation of minutes and oversight of regulatory filings in coordination with accounting and legal partners.

2) Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

* Responsible for the fiscal integrity of PSL, to include submission to the Board of Directors of a proposed annual budget and quarterly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.

* Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive and compliant position.

* Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support PSL’s mission.

3) Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.

* Responsible for serving as PSL’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.

* Responsible for ownership and maintenance of key partnerships, including companies, partner organizations, and government groups.

* Responsible for implementation of PSL’s events and programs that carry out the organization’s mission.

* Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that PSL can successfully fulfill its Mission into the future.

* Responsible for the enhancement of PSL’s image and mission by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations.

4) Organization Operations. Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.

* Responsible effective administration of PSL’s operations.

* Responsible for the hiring, day-to-day management, and retention of competent, qualified staff.

* Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

* Responsible for establishing employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

* A bachelor’s degree or greater

* Three or more years management experience, including staff management

* Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting

* Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation

* Knowledge and experience with fundraising strategies and donor relations

* Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups

* Strong track record of successful and effective public speaking appearances

* Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance

* Ability to quickly build relationships and convey influence when needed at all levels in order to resolve conflicts and maintain direction

* Existing network and working knowledge of Philadelphia’s startup ecosystem preferred

COMPENSATION:

Annual compensation in the range of $60,000-$70,000 is commensurate with experience and other qualifications. Benefits package includes health insurance plan and PTO.
